Bob’s Your Uncle

I’m in two minds as to whether to totally sack off this blog, or to make more effort with it.

There’s plenty of places on the internet where Croydon gets slagged off (hello every single Croydon Facebook page) – sure there are problems, but I don’t really want to add to the moaning.

However, I’m not going to bs people – burnt toast is burnt toast and I’m not willing to dress it up in any other way. There are Instagrammers to tell you everything is amazing, I’m not one of those.

What I wanted to do is have a tiny little presence to write about some of the more interesting places in Croydon to eat, especially the independents and add a little positivity to the town.

So here I was one Saturday lunchtime, looking for a spot of brunch – and I finally popped into Bob’s Your Uncle, having walked past it 200 times.

From outside it appears that there is enough seating for about 2 people – and I didn’t even think that maybe it would be somewhere for anything other than coffee and cake.

But they do brunch. And they have a little downstairs with more seating.

Service was welcoming – it was order at the counter, I had freshly squeezed orange juice which came with ice – which seemed strange for winter in Croydon, but I don’t know if that is a me thing.

It was mostly a case of things on toast on the menu, so I went for Bob’s eggs royale – priced at just £10.00.

The farmhouse hash being the other thing that was really tempting.

So the first thing to mention is probably the Hollandaise, which was rather heavy on the dill – not my favourite herb, but your mileage may vary.

Sourdough bread was supplied – though I’d argue it needed a little more toasting as it felt quite lightly done.

Poached eggs were perfect – runny inside as you’d expect. These were golden.

But then the salmon…what salmon?

There was the tiniest sliver of smoked salmon that you could possibly get away with under the Trade Description Act. I know, it was only £10.00, but maybe make it £12.00 and offer enough salmon to make it taste like Eggs Royale.

So I’m sad that I don’t get to be more effusive in praise, because Bob’s Your Uncle should be my kind of venue. I will go back though, and I will have the cakes – and hopefully I’ll get something that impresses me enough to upgrade the score.

But besides…from my limited experience so far, it is the best place for brunch in Croydon.

Later that night I had a chicken wrap at BoxPark…gosh that was terrible. And I’m not going to blog about that.

My score is a 6.90 out of 10.
